How to Handle Crisis

When Should I Get Immediate Help?

You should seek immediate help if you or someone else is in immediate danger, feels unable to stay safe, or is experiencing a mental health emergency. You don't have to figure out on your own whether a situation is "serious enough" to ask for help. If you're unsure, it's okay to reach out and let a trained professional help you figure out what to do next.

Teens:

If you're struggling right now, please tell someone you trust. You don't have to explain everything perfectly or know exactly what to say. You can simply say, "I'm having a really hard time and I need some help."

If talking face-to-face feels difficult, you can start by sending a text or writing a note. Reaching out is a huge sign of strength, and you deserve support.

Parents:

If you're worried about your child's immediate safety or believe they are experiencing a mental health emergency, take their concerns seriously and seek immediate professional help. Stay with them when possible, involve another trusted adult if appropriate, and contact emergency services or a crisis service for guidance.

You do not need to have all the answers. Your role is to help your child connect with people who can provide the appropriate support.

Worried Friends:

If you're worried about a friend, you don't have to handle the situation by yourself. Let a trusted adult know what you're concerned about, even if your friend asks you to keep it a secret. You can support your friend, but you aren't responsible for solving the problem on your own.

If you believe your friend is in immediate danger, it is extremely important that you contact a trusted adult or emergency services right away. Situations can change quickly, and reaching out for help can make an incredible difference.
